Admissions Policy and Procedures
2015-2016 Admissions information
Saint Raphael School provides an excellent Catholic education while embracing students of all cultural, religious, and economic backgrounds. Special consideration is given to families who have siblings in our school and Catholic families who are members of Saint Raphael Parish. All families are welcome at Saint Raphael School.
Saint Raphael School, established in 1889, fosters a Catholic faith that gives meaning and direction to life, challenges and guides our students to pursue academic excellence, and instills within them a spirit of service to God and to others.
At Saint Raphael we believe: The gospel message of Jesus develops a school community of love, peace, respect, and service to others; Our learning environment should stimulate intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, creativity, and pursuit of knowledge; Teachers, as catechists and mentors, inspire a life-long love of learning; Parents are the primary educators of their children and that they unite with the school in an active partnership; Health is critical to the overall emotional and physical development of the whole child.
- Attend an Open House from 8:30AM to 10:30AM to experience a guided tour by a member of our student body and receive an admissions packet.

- For Kindergarten, schedule an assessment. For 1st-8th grade, schedule a shadow date.
- Complete and return your application with a $100 fee.
- Parents should take the recommendation form from our admissions packet to their child’s preschool or school to be completed by their current teacher.
SCREENING AND EVALUATION
Applicants for Kindergarten must be five years old by September 1, 2016. In the spring, members of the Saint Raphael faculty will screen each kindergarten applicant on an individual basis. The screening process takes approximately thirty minutes and is stress free. It provides us with an opportunity to meet your child and to determine their readiness for our Kindergarten program.
Please note: While our screening process is important, it only provides us with a "snapshot" of your child’s capabilities on a given day. For this reason, we ask for your child’s preschool teacher to provide us with a recommendation for your child. This allows us to have a more comprehensive evaluation, which will allow us to have a better understanding of your child’s needs.
The teacher of their incoming grade level will evaluate applicants for grades one through eight. The evaluation process includes grade level appropriate testing in Language Arts and Mathematics. Previous standardized tests, report cards, and a recommendation from your child’s current teacher are required. All of this information will be evaluated, allowing us to have a better understanding of your child’s needs and to determine his or her ability to work on a level that is on a par with Saint Raphael students.
Please call (415) 454- 4455 to schedule an appointment or if you have missed the cutoff date.

New Parent Orientation Meeting
Saint Raphael incorporates a Sacramental Program into its curriculum. Catholic students may prepare for First Reconciliation and First Eucharist and will receive these sacraments in second grade. Any Catholic student in any grade may also prepare for and receive the Sacraments of First Eucharist and First Reconciliation.
Any student may be an altar server. Students are trained during the second half of their fourth grade year.
Our middle school classes have approximately 26 students, while our lower grades have slightly fewer students. Fewer students in the class during the student’s formational years will guarantee a better teacher to student ratio for optimum learning.
The Saint Raphael School graduates of 2013 are attending the following high schools: Marin Catholic; Saint Ignatius College Preparatory; Marin School of the Arts; Redwood High School; Terra Linda High School; San Rafael High School.
Each family is expected to complete 40 hours of volunteer service. 10 hours must be fulfilled in one or more fundraising events. Single parent families can request a reduction of hours. Please discuss this with the administration.
EXTENDED CARE Extended Care is available for all students in the morning from 7:15 a.m. until the bell rings at 8 a.m. Morning care is free. Extended Care is offered from dismissal until 6 p.m. There is a fee for Extended Care in the afternoon.
